Orangemen agree to re-route their 12th parades away from nationalist districts in Belfast, Armagh, Newry and Derry.
After sitting for just two weeks, and against the background of the marching season crisis, the Charlie Haughey controversy and Dunnes `payments to politicians' tribunal, Leinster House TDs take 12 weeks holidays.
Friday 11 July
There is a widespread welcome from politicians and residents' groups for the Orange Order's decision to re-route controversial parades. Gerry Adams calls for dialogue.
The Orange Order in Belfast calls on all unionist politicians to withdraw from peace talks because, they say, their parades were re-routed when the RUC said they could not protest them.
Saturday 12 July
Thousands of Orangemen march in their annual 12th of July parades. Most parades pass off peacefully.
Loyalists clash with Orangemen over the re-routing of the 12th parade in Derry city.
ETA kills a politician from the ruling right wing Popular Party after their demand for the transfer of prisoners is refused. Demonstrations against ETA are held throughout Spain and the Basque Country.
Sunday 13 July
The body of socialist, guerrilla and Cuban revolution hero Ernesto Ché Guevara is taken back to Cuba, 30 years after being murdered by state forces in Bolivia in 1967.
Fifteen people in are left homeless and £1 million in damage is caused after freak floods wreak devastation in Glencullen, County Mayo.

At the Dunnes `payment to politicians' tribunal in Dublin, Ben Dunne claims that in 1993 £1 million was paid to a politician to influence legislation.
It is confirmed by Mo Mowlam that the British government has resumed contact with Sinn Féin, attempting to clarify terms for involvement in all-party talks.
Tuesday 15 July
Former 26-County Taoiseach Charles J Haughey take the stand in the Dunnes tribunal, saying his financial affairs were the responsibility of the late Des Traynor, his financial advisor.
An 18-year-old Catholic woman is shot dead in a sectarian attack in Aghalee, County Antrim.
Wednesday 16 July
The DUP and UKUP walk out of the Stormont talks in a row over decommissioning proposals.
