Gerry Murphy

The death took place on 4 June of Gerry Murphy, formerly of Heilbhic, An Rinn, Co. Phort Láirge and late of Ballymabin, Dunmore East.

A native of Cork, Gerry moved to Waterford in 1970 to take up the position of Assistant County Engineer, a job he held until he was arrested after the Claudia was intercepted off the Waterford coast in 1973 carrying five tons of arms.

Gerry had a lifelong love of the sea, owning his own boat for a time and in 1957 represented Ireland internationally as a swimmer.

Gerry's remains were removed form Killea Church on 5 June and was buried the following day in the new graveyard in Rinn O gCuanach.

As has become customary by now at funerals of republicans in Waterford, scores of plainclothes Gárdaí were present.

Gerry is survived by his partner Phil and son Cormac, his wife Bernie, son Philip, daughters Deirdre and Danielle and other family members.
