Game on? Unionist minister says DUP may back Border poll

Arlene Foster

‘Sinn Féin’s vision is for ‘An Ireland of Equals’, united and at peace with itself and its neighbours, including Britain. It is time for a dialogue on how we heal the hurt, and move into a new era’

DUP Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has told the Stephen Nolan Show on BBC Radio Ulster that Peter Robinson’s party may take up the challenge of a Border poll.

MitchelMcLaughlinSinn Féin MLA Mitchel McLaughlin (right) welcomed the shift, saying he looks forward to a “clear, radical and open debate in regards to the social, economic and political benefits of a united Ireland”.

At the weekend in Dublin at an event attended by more than 400 people, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams launched a ‘Uniting Ireland’ campaign for a Border poll.

During an on-air discussion with Mitchel on Tuesday, Arlene Foster said that unionists are looking for a validation of the union with Britain as “something we’re looking at at the moment”, adding:

“So I’m saying to Mitchel McLaughlin, and I'm saying to him very clearly: we may just call your bluff on this one, Mitchel, and be very careful what you wish for.”

Mitchel McLaughlin happily picked up the gauntlet.

“I look forward to the debate that can now be developed,” the South Antrim Assembly member said.

“This should now create the space for and provoke clear, radical and open debate in regards to the social, economic and political benefits of a united Ireland.

“Sinn Féin is ready for this debate. It is a debate that must be had if we are to manage the change that is already happening within Ireland and ensure that rights and entitlements for all are safeguarded and upheld.

“Sinn Féin’s vision is for ‘An Ireland of Equals’, united and at peace with itself and its neighbours, including Britain. It is time for a dialogue on how we heal the hurt, and move into a new era.”
