Ballymurphy Massacre and Jordan families picket Coroner’s Office

Relatives of people killed by Paras in Ballymurphy picket the Coroner’s Office

Relatives of people killed by British Army paratroopers in Ballymurphy in August 1971 picketed the office of the North’s Senior Coroner John Leckey on Wednesday 21 November.

When representatives of the families, supported by Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan, tried to enter the building and to meet with the Coroner their way was blocked by the PSNI.

The protest was prompted by last week’s decision by Leckey not to hear inquests into the state killings of as many as 20 people. This was in spite of a ruling by the North’s most senior judicial officer, the Attorney General, who said the inquests could go ahead.

The parents of IRA Volunteer Pearse Jordan, shot dead by the RUC in 1992, who have waited 20 years for the inquest into their son’s killing, also attended the picket.
