As 1m French citizens all over the world vote for their President, Adams urges Irish Government to look and learn
‘Irish passport holders among the Diaspora and citizens in the North should have the right to vote in Irish Presidential elections’
ONE MILLION French citizens living overseas can vote in their country’s Presidential election – why can’t Irish citizens in North and Diaspora vote in theirs, Gerry Adams asks.
The Louth TD said his Sinn Féin has consistently raised this issue with the Irish Government and the Irish Government has committed itself to discussing voting rights for emigrants in Presidential elections in the Constitutional Convention.
Gerry Adams urged the Irish Government to look closely at the electoral rules governing the French Presidential election which started this weekend. He said:
“Irish passport holders among the Diaspora and citizens in the North should have the right to vote in Irish Presidential elections. This must be a priority issue for the Constitutional Convention.”
