Sinn Féin Health & Children spokesperson and Cavan-Monaghan TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has described as “a danger to the health and safety of patients” Wednesday’s announced closure of a range of hospital services in Cavan and Monaghan General Hospital over the summer months. He said it was “obscene” that patients are suffering cuts while the Government has just poured another €2 billion of taxpayers money into Anglo-Irish Bank.
“The Government and the HSE are treating our hospitals like retail outlets that can be opened and closed at will to meet management ‘targets’,” he said. “This is the outworking of Government health cutbacks in Budget 2010. It is going to get worse as the embargo on recruitment takes hundreds of front-line posts out of the health service in the coming months. What is happening can only be described as obscene. Patients suffer and hospital services are shut down for budgetary reasons while the Government has just poured another €2 billion of taxpayers’ money into the zombie Anglo-Irish Bank.”
