Sinn Fein's O'Kane threatened

Sinn Fein local government candidate for Limavady, Malachy O'Kane received a posted death threat from the UVF in the week that the ``Loyalist Volunteer Force'' abducted and murdered Bellaghy GAA official, and father of six, Sean Brown.

The threat came days after The Belfast Newsletter ran a front page story on Malachy O'Kane highlighting the fact that he served a life sentence for killing three British soldiers. The card, on which the threat was scribbled, displayed a UVF mural.

Sinn Fein's Northern Chairperson Gearoid O'hEara warned nationalists to be vigilant, given the high rate of attempts to murder nationalists in the last three months. ``The actions of loyalist death-squads in recent weeks only serve to underline how serious Sinn Fein regards the threat to Malachy O'Kane from the Limavady UVF''.

O'Kane was last week elected to Limavady council, coming in on the first count.
