THE memory of deceased Sinn Féin Councillors Ivan Barr and Charlie McHugh will be honoured at a West Tyrone Sinn Féin Dinner to be held in the Mellon Country Inn on Saturday 21 November.
Speaking about the upcoming function which will be attended by upwards of 300 people Brian McMahon, the Sinn Féin group leader on Strabane District Council, said,
“One year on from the deaths of our esteemed comrades Ivan and Charlie, family and friends and party members will gather together at this special event to pay tribute to the immense contribution that both men gave to the political social, civic and economic life of this area down through decades of activism. It was a contribution characterised by deep commitment, hard work and self-sacrifice.
“Elected to Strabane District Council for the first time in 1985, the deaths of Ivan and Charlie last year have left a huge void in so many peoples’ lives and this special tribute night will be a very emotional occasion, not least, for the families of our comrades who are no longer with us.
“At a special dinner held last year, tribute was paid to the memory of deceased comrades Mickey McAnespie, Cathal Quinn, Patsy Mc Mahon and Barney McAleer who all had served as Sinn Féin councillors on Omagh District Council:  During the past four years, Sinn Féin has lost six former or serving Councillors in West Tyrone and it is important that the huge sacrifice they have made in representing our community, often during very difficult and dangerous times, is accorded fitting tribute..
“There are a limited number of tickets still left available for the tribute dinner in memory of Ivan and Charlie and I would urge anyone interested in securing a ticket to contact either the Sinn Féin office in Strabane (028 71886464) or Omagh (028 82253040) as soon as possible.
