Speaking at a Good Friday Agreement Oireachtas Committee meeting on Tuesday Sinn Féin Dublin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh welcomed the initial finding of the St. Andrews Agreement Review Group but warned against any delay to the end of year deadline for completion of its work.
Ó Snodaigh was joined at the meeting by Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Pat Doherty.
Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin gave a report to the meeting on the recent North South Ministerial Council meeting held in Farmleigh during which the work to date of the St. Andrews Agreement Review Group was discussed.
The Dublin TD said:
“An update of the work of the St. Andrews Agreement Review Group was given during the recent North South Ministerial Council (NSMC) meeting held in Dublin during which the Council discussed the recent completion of the first stage of the review process.
“In the context of the current recession which is affecting all corners of the island this is good news and at today’s meeting, Sinn Féin stressed the need for there to be no slippage on the target completion date set out by the NSMC. The remaining work of the Review includes looking at the need for additional all Ireland bodies and areas of co-operation.
“The economic and social challenges of having two separate economies competing against each other on a small island can no longer be ignored.
The work of the St. Andrews Agreement Review Group must be completed on time and must be also published. This will empower the Oireachtas Good Friday Committee to begin proper and start delivering for the people North and South.”
