Orange flags spread in Fermanagh
FERMANAGH Sinn Féin Cllr Ruth Lynch has expressed the party’s concern at the proliferation of Union Jack and Orange flags that, she claims, are becoming a source of major concern for nationalist residents in her area.
Cllr Lynch referred to the situation in Lisnaskea in particular.
“At a time when Sinn Féin is doing everything it can as a party to remove nationalist flags from areas across the county, we find the Orange Order seemingly determined to turn back the clock with a massive display of flags in towns and villages all over Fermanagh.
“In the case of Lisnaskea, the town is celebrating a community festival this weekend and the occasion will be marred by this ugly sectarian display from the lampposts.”
The councillor was joined in her expressions of concern by Michelle Gildernew MP, who called for the removal of flags that she insisted are extremely provocative and immensely damaging to community relations.
“At a time when political and community leaders are working to build a new society, once again we find the loyal orders attempting to dredge up division and old antagonisms. These flags must be removed at once.”
