SPEAKING ahead of a Foras na Gaeilge meeting which was addressed by the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív, Sinn Féin Donegal Senator Pearse Doherty called on the Minister to step up and guarantee the future of the Irish language newspaper Foinse. The Senator has also called on the government to ensure that the Irish Language Strategic Plan 2028 be delivered throughout the 32 counties.
Senator Doherty said:
“The future of our last Irish language paper is under threat. The Minister needs to step up and ensure the future of this vital language medium is guaranteed. If operating costs for the paper are the issue then they simply need to be resolved. The Minister needs to take a hands on approach with the sole objective of working with the paper to ensure that it remains in production.
“Sinn Féin representatives attending the Foras na Gaeilge meeting will also be calling for Irish Language Strategic Plan 2028 to be delivered across the 32 counties. This is Sinn Féin’s vision for Plan 2028. The Minister and his government must make best use of Foras na Gaeilge as a 32 county organisation to ensure that the Irish language community from across the island be included in this initiative.”
