FF/FG backing for nuclear power behind poster campaign
FIANNA FÁIL’S and Fine Gael’s backing for nuclear power are part of the theme of the latest phase of East EU candidate Tomás Sharkey’s poster campaign.“The election campaign has highlighted that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are pro-nuclear,” Tomás Sharkey said. “Ned O’Keefe of Fianna Fáil told the nation that he wants to have a nuclear station built on his family land in County Cork! Fianna Fáil have yet to rescind this statement or assure the Irish people that they reject nuclear power plants.
“We have also learned how Fine Gael and their EPP group in Brussels are pushing to have more and cheaper nuclear plants built across Europe. Fine Gael deny they want nuclear plants built in Ireland but this is irrelevant. There is only one place in the world that takes nuclear waste for reprocessing. That is Sellafield.
“Only last week officials in the HSE admitted to me that the north-east has a rate of skin, lung and leukaemia cancers that is higher than the rest of the country. There is no established cause for these figures. Every family in this region has been hit by one of these cancers.
“It is disgusting that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are driving the nuclear agenda in Europe.
