Sinn Féin Ard Fheis 2008 : Party Development and Constituion and Rules

Central role of An Phoblacht reaffirmed

THE Sinn Féin Ard Fheis concluded its Friday evening session with a section of the clár on Party Development and Constitution and Rules.
Motions seeking to overturn Sinn Féin’s policy of positive discrimination in favour of women to address gender imbalance within the organisation were defeated, as was a detailed motion seeking to give Ógra Shinn Féin members the same voting rights as Sinn Féin cumann delegates at Ard Fheiseanna.
A motion from the Piaras McCann Cumann in Cashel, County Tipperary, seeking to take socialism out of the Sinn Féin constitution was overwhelmingly rejected.
The Ard Fheis also reaffirmed support for An Phoblacht. Speaking for the Ard Chomhairle, An Phoblacht Editor Seán Mac Brádaigh said that the republican newspaper would continue to play a central role in providing important weekly communication to Sinn Féin members and the party’s wider support base, and in the key areas of party publicity, campaigning and recruitment. He insisted that An Phoblacht will be to the fore in the task of building Sinn Féin throughout the country in the times ahead.
