On a recent visit to Canada following the IRA initiative on putting arms beyond use, Sinn Féin Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness met and briefed Irish-Canadian supporters.

The event in Calgary was organised by Friends of Sinn Féin.

"We have declared for peace," said McGuinness to the capacity crowd. "We all regret that we have lost lives over the years... we are not afraid or ashamed because for the last ten years we have had a successful peace process."

The Peace Process had received praise as a modern-day example of conflict resolution by world leaders according to McGuinness. "It is politicians who now have the biggest obligation to make this work," he said.

McGuinness's focus during his Canadian visit was people, those who through the best and worst of times worked for justice and peace in Ireland. Embracing his Canadian audience by personally acknowledging their various backgrounds McGuinness proved immensely popular.
