Direct rule minister challenged over education cutbacks

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP on Tuesday led a party delegation including Michael Ferguson MLA, Fermanagh Councillor Thomas O'Reilly and Derry Councillor Maeve McLaughlin to meet with the Direct Rule Education Minster Angela Smith in Stormont Buildings.

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Michael Ferguson said that he had a forthright exchange with Smith on the need for further investment, a more inclusive and strategic approach to delivering change and meeting education need.

"The Minister agreed to seek further investment and she will be meeting Peter Hain, Secretary of State, on this matter," he said.

"We were at pains to point out that all the main educational stakeholders, from parents and teachers to the Unions and Churches are all aware of the need to introduce change.

"However, change must be underpinned by consultation with the main stakeholders rather than the current scattergun approach that is hurting the education system and in particular the children with special needs."
