SF will join government on its own terms

On Tuesday, 26-County Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern indicated that he sees it as inevitable that Sinn Féin will serve in a 26-County Government in the future.

While media commentators noted that this was the first time a senior government politician had made such a remark about Sinn Féin's participation in government in the South, Sinn Féin Assembly group leader Conor Murphy pointed out that the Minister was simply acknowledging reality. With its increasing electoral mandate, Sinn Féin will, of course, serve in an Irish government in the future.

Any participation by Sinn Féin in a coalition will be determined by the party membership and by whether such a course would best advance the republican agenda of political, constitutional and social change.
