Demanding change

There is a growing mood of confidence among Sinn Féin activists in the run up to the forthcoming elections. With just over three weeks to go, the message on the doorsteps is that people are demanding change.

The party is poised to make advances in the European elections and is aiming to at least double its representation on local authorities.

This message has also reached the establishment politicians, thus the latest wave of allegations and accusations directed against republicans.

People can see through the dirty tricks, however. They know who has delivered for their areas, who works the hardest, whose integrity is worth putting faith in.

There is a real anger out there because despite the increase in wealth in the 26-County state, life has become increasingly difficult. People remember the promises of the last election and how they were broken and increasing numbers don't trust Fine Gael or Labour to do any better.

Michael McDowell's racist citizenship referendum may offer scapegoats, but people will not be taken in. The blame for our unequal society lies firmly with those in power and their fat cat business buddies.

Gerry Adams reminded people this week that it is important not to become disillusioned and it is important that people make sure that they are on the electoral register. The face of councils in the North was changed, he said, not by sitting back, but by getting out on polling day to elect councillors who are committed to bringing about equality, local accountability and real progress.

Sinn Féin has proved that it can deliver change in the Peace Process, in political institutions the length and breadth of Ireland and in local communities.

Our councillors have a record of work second to none. When they are joined by new councillors after June 11, they will bring a new dynamic to local government, while our MEPs will take the demand for Irish unity to the heart of Europe.
