Bairbre de Brún addresses the Safer Streets rally

A Safer Streets for All vigil was held at Penny Lane, off the Andersonstown Road, in Belfast last Thursday 5 February. Sinn Féin Assembly member Bairbre de Brún was the main speaker at the event.

Despite torrential rain, dozens turned out to support the vigil, organised by local community groups and Sinn Féin councillors.

Among those at the vigil were representatives from Families Bereaved Through Car Crime, ethnic minority groups, Age Concern and local women's groups.

Sinn Féin's Michael Ferguson explained that Penny Lane was chosen as it was there that a young woman was savagely raped just over a year ago.

"There have been a number of other rapes in West Belfast in recent months so the vigil was organised to give people the opportunity to express their disgust at such attacks and those who are carrying them out."
