King selected as SF councillor for Tallaght South

At a candidate selection convention in Tallaght, Dublin South-West Sinn Féin unanimously endorsed local party chairperson Cathal King for co-option to the party's seat on South Dublin County Council for Tallaght South.

Due to the ending of the dual mandate, sitting Sinn Féin councillor and TD Seán Crowe has stood down as councillor for the Tallaght South ward. The proceedings were chaired by Sinn Féin EU candidate for Dublin, Marylou McDonald.

Cathal King, is currently party chairperson for Dublin South-West and also serves as full-time Constituency Manager for Sinn Féin in the area. At 27 years of age, Cathal is currently the youngest member of South Dublin County Council.

During the successful General Election campaign of May 2002, which saw Seán Crowe top the poll for Sinn Féin in Dublin South-West, Cathal played a key role as Director of Elections for the constituency. He has lived in Tallaght all his life, and as a keen GAA enthusiast, is a strong advocate for the provision of sporting facilities for local communities.

King said that he was greatly honoured by the opportunity to represent the people of Tallaght South, and was looking forward to the many challenges that lie ahead as a county councillor.

"As someone who was born, reared, and educated in Tallaght, I am acutely aware of the potential of this constituency and the hard work that is being carried by people throughout the area to make it a better place for all," he said. "I have also had first-hand experience of the many problems that exist for people in the area, and am confident of utilising this experience in the council chamber to tackle the issues directly affecting people in Tallaght South. In doing so, it is my firm intention to continue the dedicated work of Seán Crowe TD in his role as councillor over the past four years. I also look forward to working with my colleague on the council, Mark Daly."
