Tragic death of Derry republican

Martin McGuinness shocked at death of friend

Mid-Ulster MP Martin McGuinness has expressed his shock and sadness at the tragic death of a lifelong friend Paddy Mullan in a fishing accident.

"I was privileged to have known Paddy Mullan for over 30 years," he said. "A very strong family man and good father, Paddy was very hard working and totally dedicated to his family and friends. He was a member of Sean Dolan's GAA Club and like myself, a keen fisherman and a lover of wild, quiet places. How sad that he should have lost his life whilst enjoying the hobby he loved.

"Paddy was also a lifelong and well read republican who was dedicated to the pursuit of equality, justice and a united Ireland. During the '70s he played a leading role in opposing the injustices perpetrated against the community, at one time holding the rank of OC Derry Brigade, Óglaigh ná hÉireann. Throughout the ensuing years his commitment to improving the lives of the people remained steadfast. His support of the Peace Process and the efforts of the Sinn Féin leadership were an invaluable source of strength and encouragement for me. The Mullan family and the City of Derry has suffered a huge loss with the passing of a highly respected republican. We will miss him.

"I extend my deep and sincere sympathy to Paddy's wife Charlotte, his children, Dermott, Niall, Ursula, Corinne, his father Paddy, his brothers and his sister, former Sinn Féin Councillor, Marian Hutcheon."
