Martin McGuinness visited the nationalist Short Strand neighbourhood in east Belfast on Wednesday 16 January. The deputy First Minister was there to meet with residents of the small nationalist enclave that has been under constant attack most recently from loyalists since early December 2012. While in the district, McGuinness spoke with residents and community representatives in the local community centre before he visited families living in the Strand Walk whose homes have been targeted by pro-UVF mobs throwing petrol and paint bombs. Tommy McNulty, who lives at the top of Strand Walk, explained how he is constantly under threat and keeps a number of fire extinguishers to hand as a precaution. On the night of Monday 14 January, loyalist mobs bombarded the nearby St Matthew’s Church in a sustained attack that also saw attacks on homes on Strand Walk, at the interface with the Newtownards Road.

Speaking at the demonstration, Sinn Féin Environment, Community and Local Government spokesperson Brian Stanley TD told demonstrators this Bill will drive even more hard-pressed families into the arms of loansharks. Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD described the bill as a “Family Home Tax”. She told supporters Sinn Féin will resist the Property Tax “every step of the way”.

IN JUST OVER an hour the staff and elected representatives based in Sinn Féin’s Connolly House offices on the Andersonstown Road in Belfast raised £350 in aid of the Children’s Hospice. Organised around the switching on of the Christmas tree lights on Thursday 13 December, the annual fund-raiser has become very popular with party activists and supporters. Sinn Féin Deputy Mayor of Belfast Tierna Cunningham had the honour of switching on the lights but the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Santa – and the children were glad to see him too!
