Soldier released after security breach

A British soldier who had been questioned about a possible internal breach of security at Castlereagh PSNI Barracks in East Belfast was released without charge on Monday 12 July.

The investigation into the incident, believed to have happened last week, is concentrating on the part of the building used by the British Army's undercover squads.

The PSNI said the incident didn't involve PSNI security and didn't involve a break-in.

The British Army confirmed that they are assisting the PSNI in an investigation into a possible internal breach of security at British military premises but would not say which of its facilities at the complex, which houses its undercover British Army operatives, is under investigation.

A break-in at PSNI Special Branch offices at the Castlereagh base in March 2002 sparked a major political crisis after it was blamed on the IRA, a claim denied by republicans.

Sinn Féin's policing spokesperson, Gerry Kelly, said the incident raises questions about collusion, "as we have plenty of examples in the past of how British soldiers passed on information to loyalist death squads".
