Last year, Sinn Féin appointed Conor Murphy and Pearse Doherty to jointly head up the party’s United Ireland Task Force. They have a responsibility to roll a series of events throughout every Irish county and to mainstream their work into every elected forum on the island of Ireland. After a successful launch of that campaign in the United States, and leading up to the launch in England this weekend, the Sheena Campbell Sinn Féin Cumann in Queen’s University, Belfast, on Tuesday night hosted a public talk on “A United Ireland - How it will happen.” National Chairperson Declan Kearney outlined the importance of a United Ireland and the road map via which republicans can achieve this. The main priority for us as republicans, he said, is to remove all strands of political power from Britain and empower local democratically elected community activists. Mary Lou McDonald, party vice president and a member of the United Ireland Task Force, spoke about the task of popularising republicanism in the 26 counties and about how to make the national question relevant to southern voters. Speaking after the event Grace Lynch, candidate in the forthcoming Student Union elections promised that this would be the first of many public debates on this issue to be hosted across Ireland.
