Council of Europe award for British Irish Rights Watch

AFTER almost 20 years, the work of the human rights watchdog British Irish Rights Watch (BIRW) has been recognised with a new European award organised by the Council of Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Human Rights Prize.
A panel of human rights experts representing 47 countries unanimously selected BIRW from 14 other individuals and non-governmental organisations who had been nominated.
Announcing the award, the panel said BIRW had been selected because of its “outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights in Europe”.
BIRW was praised for its “courageous and outstanding work in monitoring and bringing to light human rights abuses and its fight against impunity in Northern Ireland”.
