George and Pop Annual Football Tournament

Derry Sinn Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell has said that the annual ‘George and Pop Football Tournament’ will take place on Saturday 16 August to coincide with the Annual Hunger Strike commemoration taking place that weekend in Derry.
 Councillor Campbell said:
 “This tournament is an annual event that commemorates two IRA Volunteers,  George McBrearty and Charles ‘Pop’ Maguire who were killed on active service on the 28 May 1981.
 “The tournament which has a prize fund of £1000 is a seven a side competition held in the Bishop Field football pitches and is open to the first 16 teams that register beforehand.
 “Registration will take place at 6pm on the evening of the tournament and as this tournament has been oversubscribed in the past I am calling on teams to register early so they can be included in the competition.
 “The competition will be followed by a presentation in the Telstar where full rules of the competition can be found.”
