THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR featured in a film shown during the West Armagh Festival at the weekend about local volunteers who served with the International Brigades fighting Franco’s fascists in the 1936-1939 prelude to the Second World War.
The event had a special emphasis on Jim Haughey, of Lurgan in County Armagh, and Charlie Donnelly, from Killybrackey in County Tyrone, both of whom soldiered with the International Brigades.
A panel discussion and Q&A involving Sinn Féin’s Francie Molloy, Hugh Owen and Tommy McKearney rounded off a very successful and moving tribute to the soldiers of the Spanish Republic.
