McKay bomb threat

Death threats were made last week against Sinn Féin North Antrim MLA and Policing Board member Daithí McKay and local Sinn Féin colleagues.
The phone threats claimed a bomb was left outside McKay’s home, that a gun would be put to the head of Councillor Anita Cavlan and that a constituency office staff member hadn’t long left to live. The caller also claimed that a bomb was left outside Dunloy Chapel.
McKay said the chilling threats would “not deter Sinn Féin from pursuing our objectives of Irish Unity”.

Offensive loyalist flags in Armagh Mall

• The new Sinn Féin Mayor of Armagh City Noel Sheridan has said the flying of UDA and UVF flags and emblems on the Mall in Armagh City has angered many local people and he is asking the council to contact the PSNI to seek their removal.

Second term for Walsh as mayor of Carrick-on-Suir

COUNCILLOR Liam Walsh has been elected mayor of Carrick on Suir, the Sinn Féin member’s second term as mayor of the County Tipperary town.
Liam Walsh aims to secure progress on a number of projects in Carrick that he feels have been dragging on for too long, in particular the Ballylynch and Coolnamuck road projects.

Sinn Féin deputy mayor in Nenagh

SINN FÉIN Councillor Seamie Morris has been appointed deputy mayor in Nenagh, County Tipperary.
Nenagh operates a system where the mayor and deputy mayor are selected due to the vote they received in the 2004 local elections, removing the need for party voting pacts.

Pomeroy events mark 20th anniversary of death of Volunteer Seamus Woods

SIXTEEN local tug-of-war teams from all over Tyrone will compete to win the Seamus Woods memorial cup at Plunkett Park, Pomeroy on Saturday, 5 July. The competition is part of a day of events to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of IRA Volunteer Seamus Woods.
Seamus Woods, a member of the IRA’s East Tyrone Brigade was killed on active service on 7 July 1988, when mortars he was preparing for an attack on the crown forces barracks in Pomeroy exploded.
Saturday evening will see a parade from the Pomeroy football pitch to the monument in Lucy Street and Guest Speakers will be in attendance.

Public inquiry call on Ringsend water plant

SINN FÉIN Dublin City Councillor Daithí Doolan has reacted angrily to reports that the water treatment plant in the Ringsend area of the city has been treating nearly 20 per cent more effluent than it is supposed to.
Doolan will table an emergency motion at the Dublin City Council meeting next Monday calling for an investigation by Environment Minister John Gormley to be made a full public inquiry.
“The public will have no confidence in an investigation that is kept secret,” Doolan said, adding that the City Manager should make a full statement on the matter.

Protest over hydrogen cyanide disposal

A LARGE protest against a plan to dispose highly toxic hydrogen cyanide chemicals in the Wicklow Mountains took place at the South Dublin County Council offices in Tallaght on Thursday, 26 June, and was supported by Sinn Féin. Demonstrators handed in a letter of protest to the County Council.
