Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness visited the historic West Belfast landmark Conway Mill last Wednesday 11 June where he met members of the Conway Mill Preservation Trust (CMPT).
During his visit McGuinness was briefed by Jim Neeson and Moya Hinds from Conway Mill who both outlined the need for further funding to allow the CMPT to develop the Mill’s economic, educational and community projects.
Conway Mill lay empty for years until in 1982 members of the West Belfast community seen it’s potential for economic and educational use and formed the Conway Mill Development Group.
The group oversaw the Mill being opened up for local businesses and artists who are now based in the Mill complex.
The Mill is also used for educational purposes with adults and young people regularly attending classes.
Speaking after his visit McGuinness told An Phoblacht, “I am pleased that departments, including OFMDFM, are supporting the further development of the site.
“I believe that by working with local communities and investing in their vision we can help the regeneration of the Mill to create prosperity and tackle poverty”.
