PEOPLE are expected to travel from across Ireland to a national rally organised by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign in Belfast this Saturday, 17 May, to mark Al Nakba. Al Nakba (meaning “catastrophe”) represents the most disastrous period in Palestinian history. It marks the illegal foundation of the state of Israel on 14 May 1948. To achieve this, some 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their lands, 531 villages, towns and cities were depopulated and destroyed. The state of Israel is currently officially celebrating this crime against the Palestinian people. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign says: “Even today, six million Palestinian refugees are prevented from returning to their homes by Zionists, in direct contravention of UN resolutions and common decency. “Everything, absolutely everything, that has happened in Palestine – every disaster, every tragedy, every death, every imprisonment – stems from this lamentable injustice. “It follows, then, that every and any hope for Palestine and its people rests upon this injustice being overcome. “To this end, we call upon every person, group or organisation with any inclination towards justice and freedom to join with us on this momentous occasion. We hope to see you all there.” Saturday’s demonstration will assemble at the Art College in Belfast’s York Street at 1.30pm before marching to Belfast City Hall at 2pm for a rally.
