Psychiatric nurses step up action

THE Psychiatric Nurses’ Association and SIPTU have escalated industrial action over a long-running dispute with the Health Service Executive over compensation for nurses attacked at work.
There had been an overtime ban with acute units in Kildare and Tallaght closing admissions and services in Waterford and Galway hospitals being disrupted this week.
On Tuesday, 6 May, the PNA and SIPTU announced that nurses in community care facilities will refuse to be redeployed to acute psychiatric hospitals as part of the dispute.

BT still refuses recognition

BRITISH TELECOM continues to discriminate against workers in the South by refusing union recognition in the 26 Counties while giving it in the North.
Communications Workers’ Union organiser Ian McArdle told the May Day rally in Dublin last week that the union had written to BT, accusing the company of being “anti-union or anti-Irish”, to which BT responded that they were “not anti-union”.
The CWU said that it cannot accept that it is fair or equitable that a multinational like BT can run its business on an all-island basis and treat a large group of its staff this way by denying them a basic human right.
“This is not a situation that the union can tolerate any longer and the CWU is now compelled to move our campaign for equal treatment for all BT Ireland workers to another level,” Ian McArdle said.
