Adams meets Israeli Ambassador

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams met the Israeli Ambassador to London, Zvi Heifetz last Tuesday while the Ambassdor was on a two-day visit to Belfast where he met various political leaders in the North.
Adams also spoke with the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland Dr. Hikmat Ajjuri both before and after the meeting with Zvi Heifetz.
Speaking after his meeting with the Israeli Ambassador Adams said:
“Today’s meeting was a good meeting and an opportunity to discuss one of the great problems facing the world today”, the Sinn Féin President said.
“I told the Ambassador that in my opinion the future rights and freedom of the people of Israel are bound up with those of the Palestinian people, and that it will need Israelis and Palestinians working together and defending the rights and freedoms of each other if peace is to be achieved.
“This can only be achieved through dialogue based the relevant UN resolutions. That is the only way forward; all violence should end and all democratic mandates should be respected.
“I also raised the plight of Palestinian prisoners and detainees, the threat to cut off electricity, fuel and water supplies to the Gaza strip and the wall which the Israeli government is building through the Palestinians territories. Finding solutions and reaching agreements will not be easy. It will require leadership on all sides, a willingness to take risks, take initiatives, and a preparedness to compromise”, he said.
