Scotland’s First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party, Alex Salmond visited the Six Counties this week where he addressed Assembly members at Stormont.
Salmond was welcomed at Stormont by First Minister and Deputy First Minister Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness.
During remarks at a reception in Stormont’s old Senate chamber, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams welcomed Salmond in Irish and in English, congratulated him on his election as First Minister of Scotland and wished him luck in all that he does.
“We too are in the business of forging new relationships between the people
of these islands. We share much in common with our neighbours in Scotland. There is a rich historical connection between us.
“Like the Scottish National Party Sinn Féin also believes in the right of
people to self-determination. And just as Sinn Féin is promoting the harmonisation of relations and resources on this island – as we seek to make progress toward our goal of
Irish unity and independence – it is important that we discuss with our friends and neighbours in Scotland issues of mutual concern and potential benefit.”
