Acht Gaeilge protest at Stormont

"“It is time now to end the denial of rights and disrespect shown to the Irish language, culture and identity. It is time for an Acht Gaeilge." - Pat Sheehan MLA

Hundreds of Irish language activists staged a protest at Stormont today calling for an Acht Gaeilge.

The protesters, including children from a number of gaelscoileanna, marched up to the steps of Stormont where they were joined by MLAs who support the demand for an Irish language act.

Among those who took part in the protest were Sinn Féin leader in the north, Michelle O'Neill, former Culture Minister, Carál Ní Chuilín and other Sinn Féin MLAs.

The demonstrators shouted 'Acht Gaeilge Anois' and held placards calling for legislation to protect their rights as Irish speakers.

Speaking following the protest, Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan said the demand for an Irish language act is about respect.

“An Irish Language Act has both practical and symbolic importance in recognising and respecting Irish national identity.

"There needs to be language rights and protections in the north, just as there is in the rest of Ireland, in Scotland and in Wales.

“Irish language speakers are entitled to the same language rights as enjoyed by citizens in other parts of these islands."

The West Belfast MLA and gaeilgeoir also said it is long past the time for and an Acht Gaeilge.

“Irish language rights are a central part of the Good Friday Agreement and an Acht Gaeilge is a part of the 2006 St Andrew’s Agreement.

"These rights threaten no one; they humiliate no-one.

“It is time now to end the denial of rights and disrespect shown to the Irish language, culture and identity. It is time for an Acht Gaeilge," he said.
