Fidel Castro – People’s Book of Condolences opened by Sinn Féin at Belfast City Hall

• Sinn Féin Deputy Mayor of Belfast Mary Ellen Campbell signs the People’s Book of Condolence

SINN FÉIN opened a People’s Book of Condolences for Fidel Castro outside City Hall on Tuesday.

The move came after the Democratic Unionist Party blocked a proposal that Belfast City Council should emulate its sister city in Dublin where the Mayor of Dublin opened a Book of Condolences at the Mansion House mayor’s residence.

Sinn Féin Councillor Jim McVeigh said the DUP’s action was a matter of regret.

“You don’t have to agree with the politics of Fidel Castro or everything he did to allow a platform for people to show their respects to a man who was undoubtedly one of the major figures of 20th century,” the Sinn Féin councillor said.
