Video – Spectacular 3D visual projection plans for GPO on Rising centenary
PREPARATIONS are underway for a spectacular visual arts project at the GPO in 2016 which will bring the battle for Dublin to life precisely 100 years on using modern 3D mapping visual technology.
The event, entitled "The Rising 2016: Son et Lumiere" will run nightly from the 24 to the 29 of April – the actual dates of the Rising – and will use 3D visual mapping projection to bring to life the story of 1916 played out on the facade of the actual rebel headquarters.
Speaking to An Phoblacht, Sinn Féin Centenaries Commemorations Coordinator Bartle D'Arcy, says the event will be a 'must see' attraction on O'Connell Street and will also be live-streamed worldwide:
"We want to bring this building back to what it looked like 100 years ago, under fire and under artillery attack. On the actual anniversary dates, each night we hope to use this on the GPO and turn it into a must-see attraction."
Representatives of Dublin-based events management company Neon Agency and Dutch audiovisual company NuFormer – who specialise in 3D video mapping – took part in a site visit at the GPO in Dublin to formalise plans for the event.
Speaking to An Phoblacht, Natascha Rooda of NuFormer said:
"We project video mapping onto all kind of buildings, including heritage buildings such as the GPO. This building is a really good one for the type of techniques we're using. The video mapping content will be for the Rising 2016 and we will be looking to project onto the entire facade of the GPO building."
