Video: TDs see inside 1916 HQ - Urgent meeting sought with Heritage Minister
Speaking to An Phoblacht following the inspection, Gerry Adams said he is shocked by the state of the historic buildings
TDs are seeking an urgent meeting with Irish Government Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan after a visit on Tuesday to the derelict National Monument on Moore Street in the heart of Dublin City.
Sinn Féin TDs Gerry Adams, Sandra McLellan and Mary Lou McDonald visited the site of the last headquarters of the 1916 Rising along with Labour Party Junior Minister Joe Costello and Independent TD Maureen O'Sullivan. Developers want to bulldoze much of the site and replace it with a six-storey shopping mall.
Speaking to An Phoblacht after the inspection, Gerry Adams said he was shocked by the state of the historic buildings and said he is seeking an urgent meeting with Heritge Minister Jimmy Deenihan (Fine Gael).
Adams said he does not believe any other state on the planet would allow an incredibly important historical monument fall in to such a terrible state of dereliction.
The delegation also spoke with members of the Save Moore Street campaign at the site, including relatives of 1916 leaders James Connolly and Thomas MacDonagh
