Donegal fund-raiser Saturday in support of John Downey (Belmarsh Prison)
‘John’s arrest was a violation of the Weston Park Agreement and a step away from the British Government’s Peace Process commitments’ – Donegal Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn
A FUND-RAISING DANCE in support of John Downey – recently arrested and imprisoned by the British Government in a clear breach of Peace Process agreements – takes place in the Lagoon, Termon, County Donegal, 9:30pm this Saturday (15 June).
Donegal Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn (right) said:
“The wider community in Donegal was appalled when John Downey, a member of Sinn Féin and a strong advocate of the Peace Process, was arrested while travelling on holiday with his wife and ten-year-old daughter.
“His arrest was a violation of the Weston Park Agreement and a step away from the British Government’s Peace Process commitments.
“It was vindictive and it was wrong.
“The timing of his arrest, while his family was about to board a plane on a much-anticipated family holiday, was particularly cruel.
“While he is being defended by the Guildford Four and Birmingham Six’s lawyer, Gareth Pierce, John’s family now faces a costly legal battle and must pay for many trips to and from England to visit him.
“For that reason the local community has organised a fund-raising dance this Saturday in the Lagoon, Termon.”
