Guantanamo MEPs urged to call for release of Price and Corey

Protesters at Amnesty International calling for Marian Price's release

The Sinn Féin MEP urged the Irish Government, as President of the European Council, to seek the immediate release of these political prisoners

MEPs’ “honourable stand” against the illegal detention of prisoners in Guantanamo by the United States should be extended to include the cases of prisoners similarly held by EU member state Britain – Marian Price and Martin Corey – Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has told the European Parliament.

She told MEPs:

“Marian Price has been in detention for over two years in the North of Ireland, held without charge, trial or due process. She is a seriously-ill woman who has spent the majority of her incarceration in solitary confinement.

“Martin Corey is also being held without charge or trial in the North of Ireland for over three years.

“This is just as unacceptable in the North of Ireland under British Government sponsored regulations as it is under US administration in Guantanamo.”

“The EU must practice what it preaches and demand that its member states uphold the same standards they demand of others. These detentions – whether in Guantanamo or the North of Ireland – run contrary to natural justice and must cease.”

She urged the Irish Government, as President of the European Council, to seek the immediate release of these political prisoners.
