Say hello to the Provo – Gregory Campbell fumes over new Kia car
The DUP MP has tabled a motion in the Westminster parliament about it and has called on Kia to rename the model
GREGORY CAMPBELL never gets tired of being the DUP’s Mr Angry and he’s blown a gasket because Korean car-maker Kia has named its new ‘super mini’ the Provo.
The East Derry MP reckons that this is unacceptable because ‘Provos’ was a popular term for the IRA when it initially reorganised as the 'Provisional IRA' after the Civil Rights campaign was ruthlessly suppressed by the DUP MP’s unionist idols in the late 1960s.
A fuming Gregory has tabled a motion in the Westminster parliament about it and has called on Kia to rename the model.
The car has been unveiled for the International Geneva Motor Show as a “radical super-mini coupe which aims to set the streets alight”.
A Kia spokesman said no offence was intended and the name comes from “provoke – as in provoking a reaction”.
But Gregory Campbell doesn’t want to see the Provo ‘on the one road’ and still wants it changed.
So the residents of Provo, Utah, USA (right), had better watch out too, likewise any agencies issuing provisional licences or tradespeople giving provisional quotes.
Kia’s TV campaign is not using the theme tune Say Hello to the Provos but Gregory’s grinching has garnered acres of publicity for the Provo anyway.
