Clonakilty Mayor appeals to ex-pats to hold flood relief fund-raisers

'A barbeque in Bondi or a ballgame in Boston would see plenty of Clon and Irish support, I’m sure'

CLONAKILTY MAYOR Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin (Sinn Féin) says the new official Clonakilty Flood Relief website http://www.clonflood.com/ is now live, thanks to Bev and Miriam Cotton of Clonakilty Favour Exchange.

“This is a forum where I hope everything relating to last week’s flooding of the town can be viewed,” Cionnaith says.

Included is a section listing people offering help to flood victims and a ‘Donations’ section where people can donate electronically into a flood relief bank account.

“On that note, I am appealing to Clonakilty people abroad and indeed throughout Ireland to please consider organising a fundraiser and lodging the proceeds in the fund,” Cionnaith says. “A barbeque in Bondi or a ballgame in Boston would see plenty of Clon and Irish support, I’m sure.

"The fund will be administered by representatives of local charities who have a long and well-respected record of this kind of work and are totally confidential.

“It is also the place where I’m asking people with photos or videos of the flood itself: the aftermath (pictures of damaged property, street scenes of discarded property, etc) and the big clean-up. This will serve as a good pictorial record of the devastation and how the town reacted afterwards.

“Please also see my Facebook page which I update regularly as things change.”
