Fresh inquest into British Army murder of Manus Deery (15)

Manus Deery

'The Deery family requires the truth and they deserve justice'

NEWS that the North’s Attorney General has ordered a fresh inquest into the murder of a Derry teenager by a British Army sniper in 1972 has been welcomed by Sinn Féin.

Manus Deery (15) was shot dead in the nationalist Bogside area by a sniper firing from the city walls on 19 May 1972.

The British authorities subsequently admitted the soldier acted unlawfully when he shot and killed Manus but refused to prosecute.

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA and Vice-Chair of the Justice Committee Raymond McCartney today welcomed news of a fresh inquest

“The Deery family requires the truth and they deserve justice.

“The issues of accountability, truth and justice are paramount for all those who were victims and survivors of the conflict. The British state must also recognise its role in that conflict and acknowledge the part they played.”
