Organise Easter Rising commemorations now

BY ELLA O’DWYER

THE National Commemor-ation Committee is calling on all areas to immediately plan for Easter Rising commemorations as Easter Sunday falls early this year, on 23 March.
Chairperson Francie Molloy MLA has urged organisers to submit their requests for speakers, Easter Lilies and posters without delay.
At the same time, areas are asked to make sure that full details of planned commemorations are forwarded to Sinn Féin Head Office and An Phoblacht, preferably by E-mail or at least by phone (see details below).
Meanwhile, Francie Molloy urged republicans to be more imaginative and develop a family-friendly approach to commemorative events.
“We are limited only by our imaginations in the organisation of such events.
“Imagery is very important in the representation of historical events and is central to education and the historical record for future generations. The Edentubber commemoration last year was a wonderful example of that. Commemorations also need to be more inclusive both in terms of the republican family and the basic family unit. Everyone can have a role to play in commemorating our republican dead. Commemorative events in graveyards and at monuments are crucial and should be respectful but there are many additional ways in which we can commemorate our dead with dignity and I am calling on regions to think of alternative ways of remembering the past.”

If you are organising commemorations, contact: Sinn Féin Head Office (Pat Boland) by phoning 01 8726 100. E-mail [email protected]. An Phoblacht can be contacted by dialing 01 8733 839 or E-mailing [email protected] (mark the subject heading COMMEMORATION).
