Troops Out Movement launches book online

As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, the Troops Out Movement, which campaigns for British withdrawal from Ireland, will launch a new book on its website www.troopsoutmovement.com on 15 January 2004

The book, Oliver's Army — A History of British Soldiers in Ireland and other Colonial Conflicts, is written by founder member of the movement, Aly Renwick.

Renwick, who served as a British soldier in Ireland in 1968, said:

"I have been collecting material over the past 35 years and was delighted to be commissioned by the Troops Out Movement to produce this history, especially for the 30th anniversary of the movement. I believe it is a radical presentation and pulls no punches. It certainly offers an alternative perspective to most books found in the 'military' section of most bookshops."

Troops Out Movement secretary Mary Pearson said the group was very excited by this new venture. "Aly writes in a clear provocative way, detailing the motivations behind the use of troops and offers a unique insight into their operations," she said. "We hope its publication on our website will spark a lively debate. It is not only relevant to our 30th anniversary and issues of Britain in Ireland but keys into the worldwide debate on current warfare."

The book will be published on www.troopsoutmovement.com a chapter a month starting 15 January and then on the 15th of every month for the next 12 months. Downloading is encouraged so that the book can be read and referred to at leisure.
