Anger at Bin Charge increase

Sinn Féin organised a picket at the Thomas Street/Meath Street junction in Dublin on Saturday to protest plans by City Hall to increase the bin charges by a massive 23%. Sinn Féin's Andrew O'Connell said he was angry but not surprised at this massive increase.

"I have always predicted that the cost of bin charges would continue to increase, as is the pattern in every other local council where bin charges have been introduced," he said. "This increase flies in the face of promises made by the City Manager when the bin charges were first imposed in 2000. Communities will not take this lying down; people will not be bullied or intimidated into paying this double tax. Now more than ever with this increase, people will be determined to defeat this unjust and unworkable tax."

"This policy needs to be seriously challenged and the proposed bin tax increase overturned before the Book of Estimates debate on 15 December."
