Derry City Council welcomes Rossport residents

RESIDENTS from Rossport, County Mayo, campaigning against the Shell gas pipeline route were welcomed to Derry's Guildhall last Friday by Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry Mac Lochlainn, chair of Derry City Council's Environmental Services Committee. Speaking after meeting the residents, Cllr Mac Lochlainn expressed his shock and horror at the accounts of abuse and physical assaults which residents are facing as Shell attempts to force through a high-pressure gas pipeline within yards of local people's homes. Scotland rallies for public inquiry into 1971 Ballymurphy Massacre

THE republican community in Scotland held its largest demonstration in almost ten years on Saturday, 18 July, as over 5,000 people turned out in Coatbridge to show their support for the families of those murdered by the British Army in what has came to be known as 'The Ballymuphy Massacre'. The march, organised by the Coatbridge Cumann of Cairde na hÉireann welcomed supporters from as far afield as Tyrone, south Armagh and England. Free article

AFTER the enthusiasm engendered by last year's Brian Keenan Mountain Challenge in the Mournes, County Down, a second event has been arranged for Saturday 5 September and the organisers are expecting the participation of between 300 and 400 people. The event is a fund-raiser for the Sinn Féin Organisational Development Unit (ODU) to cover expenses like travel, computer equipment and other costs involved in the department's work throughout the country. IT was with great sadness that the communities of Threemilehouse in Monaghan, and Loughmacrory in County Tyrone, along with friends from much further afield, learned of the death of Kathleen McCarron of Blackraw, on 15 July last. Kathleen is survived by her husband Patsy, daughter Edel, and son Adrian. She is also survived by her mother Winnie, sister Teresa, brothers Seán and Nesha, and by a multitude of loving friends and relations. She was predeceased by her father John, and brothers Gerard and Martin. Free article

REPUBLICANS in north Kerry and the wider community in Fenit are grieving this week after the tragic death of Volunteer Patrick 'Pa' Egan. Pa, a fisherman all his life, died Wednesday last in an accident while lobster fishing off Kerry Head. Free article
