Sinn Féin councillors in Dublin succeeded in building a cross-party coalition to oppose the proposed sale of Aer Lingus at Dublin City and South Dublin Council meetings on Monday evening. A hat-trick was only prevented when Fingal County Council ruled a motion from local Sinn Féin Councillor Felix Gallagher out of order on the basis that the proposed sale of Aer Lingus was not an 'emergency' in the local authority that contains Dublin Airport. A motion on behalf of the Sinn Féin Group on Dublin City Council demanding the immediate refund of bin charges paid by householders in 2001-2002, recently declared illegal by the High Court, was ruled out of order at a meeting of the Council on Monday night. Free article

The recent annual James Connolly commemoration in Edinburgh, organised by the James Connolly Society in the city, attracted over 1,500 supporters. The theme of this year's event was 'Make Partition History' and the guest speaker was Derry Councillor Raymond McCartney. Free article

On Saturday 11 June, at Graigue Cemetery, Mountmellick, County Laois, there was a considerable attendance at the Sinn Féin commemoration of the eleven United Irishmen executed by British Forces in Mountmellick in 1798. The men had been captured by crown forces after a terrible battle outside Monasterevin, after which they were brutally tortured and then hanged in Mountmellick's Wolfe Tone Street, where a monument now stands in honour of their courage and sacrifice.
