SF MEPs support GUE/NGL resolution on McCartney

Sinn Féin MEPs Bairbre de Brún and Mary Lou McDonald on Tuesday supported a GUE/NGL resolution in the European Parliament supporting the McCartney family's campaign for justice. That motion was rejected by the parliament, which backed a motion on the issue that Sinn Féin could not support. The Sinn Féin MEPs abstained on the motion that was passed, which decided to allocate EU funds to the McCartneys to take a civil action should the PSNI criminal investigation not result in charges. Roma and Travellers face discrimination across Europe - Damning Council of Europe report cites government inaction

On 4 May, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Alvaro Gil-Robles, published his preliminary report on the human rights situation of the Roma and Travellers of Europe. The report is damning of the treatment that Travellers and Roma receive all over Europe, and Ireland is reprimanded for the discriminatory treatment of the Traveller Community. Free article

SF Dáil leader suspended after clash with Taoiseach - Ó Caoláin challenges Taoiseach on

The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has been challenged by Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin to change the "fundamentally flawed" Disability Bill. The Disability Legislation Consultation Group, representing disability organisations, is threatening to pull out of the process and oppose the Bill. Deputy Ó Caoláin urged the Taoiseach to meet the Group and adopt their five minimum demands to salvage the Bill. Free article

A nationalist soccer team based in Carnlough, County Antrim, has pulled out of the junior league after a loyalist mob attacked their bus, breaking windows and injuring some of the players as they left a football tournament in Ballymena on Saturday 7 May. Free article

Management at Sellafield in "cover-up" mode

Sinn Féin Dáil spokesperson on the Environment, Arthur Morgan, has slammed as unacceptable the three-day delay by BNFL in notifying Irish authorities of a leak of some 20 tonnes of a highly dangerous mixture, containing uranium and plutonium, which occurred at the plant on 18 April. The Louth TD said the delay in notifying Irish authorities confirms that management at Sellafield remain in "cover-up" mode, adding that they would "happily have covered-up this incident, given half a chance". Court victory for bin tax campaign
