A Catholic man was severely beaten in a sectarian attack as he walked along the Whitewell Road on the outskirts of North Belfast in the early hours of Saturday 2 April. He is the latest resident from the area to be targeted by loyalists in the past month. Free article

As infighting continues within the ranks of the UDA, East Belfast's so-called brigadier, Jim Gray, has been ousted by the loyalist paramilitary organisation. Gray was one of six brigadiers running the North's largest loyalist grouping. It is believed he took control of the UDA in East Belfast in the mid-1990s, after its then leader became a recluse due to alcoholism. Free article

Hundreds of Turkish workers at Gama Construction walked off sites at Ballymun and Balgaddy in Dublin on Monday to take part in a city centre protest to Leinster House. A smaller protest was held in Galway on Tuesday. Free article

Hundreds gathered in Rasharkin on Sunday to mark the 16th anniversary of the death of local IRA Volunteer Gerard Casey. The commemoration was the conclusion of a weekend of events to celebrate the life of the Rosnashane man. On Friday night, leading Sinn Féin member Martina Anderson held a talk in the village on A Hundred Years of Sinn Féin. Free article

Sinn Féin has selected eleven candidates to contest next month's Council elections in the Omagh District. The party has set the objective of increasing its representation on the Council this time around, having secured eight seats in 2001.
