Richard Gott is a writer, historian and journalist who worked for many years for The Guardian newspaper in London, mostly as a foreign correspondent in Latin America. He first went to Cuba in the early 1960s, after the revolution, excited about the possibilities of change. In Cuba, Gott met Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and many of the leaders of the revolution and became so fascinated by Latin America that decided to go and work there. Free article

Sinn Féin opposes water charges

At our weekly Assembly Members meeting at Stormont, Sinn Féin unanimously backed the industrial action initiated by the trade unions in opposition to proposals by Direct Rule Minister John Spellar that will lead to the loss of over 600 jobs in the Water Service in the Six Counties. Free article

Call to investigate Sugarloaf dumping

There should be an immediate investigation in to dumping on the Little Sugarloaf in Wicklow, says Bray Town Councillor John Brady. "I inspected the dump on 3 February and found at least ten violations of the licence conditions," said the Sinn Féin councillor. Free article

PSNI abuse West Belfast teens

The families of three teenage boys allegedly assaulted by the PSNI in Belfast city centre last Saturday 29 January, are to meet with solicitors to discuss taking legal proceedings and are also lodging complaints with the Police Ombudsman. Free article

Upsurge in loyalist activity

In a series of attacks over the weekend, loyalist thugs attacked the homes of nationalist families in North and West Belfast. In an attack on a house on Mill Road, on the outskirts of the Bawnmore estate in North Belfast, loyalists smashed in the front window of a nationalist couple's home at around 6am on Sunday 6 February. Céad Bliain exhibition launched in Belfast

Sinn Féin's Céad Bliain exhibition was officially launched in Belfast's Europa Hotel, celebrating 100 years of the party. The collection of documents, posters and photography will go on display throughout Belfast before travelling around the country. Already, events are being planned in every county in Ireland. If Irish Government opposes sanctions then it must prevent them

Speaking as the Dublin Government met on Tuesday to discuss the latest report from the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC), Sinn Féin Assembly member for North Belfast Gerry Kelly said that "if the Irish Government opposes sanctions then it will stop them happening". Free article

Derry people demand Doherty's release

Hundreds of friends and neighbours of Derry republican Martin 'Ducksie' Doherty, who was jailed for his refusal to give evidence to the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, placed a full-page advertisement in Tuesday's Derry Journal calling for his immediate release. Free article

Belfast Paddy's Day funding blocked again

Funding for the annual St Patrick's Day Carnival in Belfast has once again been blocked by bigots in City Hall. The £30,000 funding for the festival, to be held at City Hall, had previously been approved by the council's Good Relations Committee and the Policy and Resources Committee, with the approval of a number of unionist councillors, who had acknowledged the efforts of Carnival organisers to reach out to all communities.
