Belfast to host Volunteer Pete Ryan tribute

A republican tribute night to IRA Volunteer Pete Ryan, who was shot dead in a British shoot-to-kill operation in 1991, is to be held in Gort na Mona GAA club in Belfast on Friday 8 August. Ryan, a native of Ardboe in County Tyrone, was among a group of eight republicans who carried out one of the most daring escapes from British custody in the course of the conflict when they broke free from Crumlin Road Jail in 1981. Omagh Council honours Patsy Kelly - Family still fighting for justice

Sinn Féin Councillor Patsy Kelly was remembered last Thursday by his colleagues at Omagh District Council, on the 30th anniversary of his murder. A plaque dedicated to him was unveiled in the main chamber of the council during a ceremony also attended by his family and friends. Free article

On Monday 26 July, Iñaki Uriarte, a man dedicated to furthering Basque culture, language and traditions, died in Bilbao (Basque Country). Uriarte, who lived briefly in Ireland in 1999, was a journalist and Basque language activist. He was also the President of the Association of Popular Organisations in Bilbao. Free article
